Windows 10 Autostart: Manage Programs

The Windows 10 Autostart makes your work easier by starting many programs automatically. Through the Task Manager, you have the ability to manage the programs and thus enable or disable Autostart.

In Windows 10, you can customize the Autostart to your liking.

How to enable and add programs

You can manage the programs that should also be launched when your operating system starts via the Task Manager.
  1. Press "Shift" + "Ctrl" + "Esc" to open the Task Manager directly. Alternatively, you can right-click on the taskbar and click "Task Manager" there or use the key combination "Ctrl" + "Alt" + "Del" and then select the Task Manager.
  2. The fourth tab from the left is "Autostart". There you can see all the applications that are in the Autostart folder.
  3. You can "Enable" or "Disable" them by right-clicking on the respective application.
  4. If you want to add an application to the Autostart, then press "Win" + "R" and enter the command shell:startup.
  5. It opens the Autostart folder. You add more applications by creating a shortcut to the original file in the autostart folder. To do this, drag the file into the Autostart folder while holding down the left mouse button, then release the button. Select "Create shortcuts here".
  6. After a Windows restart, the new programs should be started at Autostart.

How to tell which application needs the most power

If you want to speed up your system, click on the heading of the fourth column titled Startup Impacts. Applications with the description "High" require the most power at system startup. Disable them if necessary. However, keep in mind that you should also launch certain programs, such as antivirus software to start your computer. Here, the security of your system is more important than the startup delay. In the Task Manager under "Autostart", you can also see how long it took your computer to fully boot up the last time it was started. The entry is called "Last BIOS Time" and is noted in the upper right corner.
