Excel: Subscript numbers - how it works

Subscript numbers are necessary in many areas, the best-known example of which are probably chemical formulas. But the function can be useful for other purposes as well. In Excel, this possibility is therefore available. To lower a number, you only need a few steps.

Subscript numbers are used for illustration and provide a better overview.

Subscript Excel numbers: Only a few clicks needed

Subscript numbers visually stand out from the crowd. Therefore, there are many areas of application for the function, which can be found quite easily in Excel. In addition to chemical formulas, references and the like, there are numerous other areas of application.
  1. Mark the cell whose content you want to subscript.
  2. Then right-click on the marked number.
  3. Select "Format cells".
  4. You will now see numerous options regarding the font. In the "Effects" area, check "Subscript".
  5. Click "Ok" to close the window. However, this will subscript the entire content in the cell. To subscript only the selected characters, select the characters.
  6. Then go to "Font" > "Effect" > "Subscript" at the top.
The selected number will then appear subscripted. In the same way, you can also strike through or superscript numbers, as is required for square numbers, for example. If the subscript number is part of a formula, then this function is also available in the formula tool. To do this, all you have to do while creating a formula is go to "Formula Tools" and select "Superscript" and then make the appropriate setting under "Subscripts and Superscripts".
