Lit: The concept of youth language simply explained

It is quite normal that young people want to speak differently than adults, to be able to distinguish themselves from them. Today's youth language is full of neologisms and trendy terms, such as "lit." Get an overview of what the trending term means and how it is used.

What Lit Means - Everything You Need to Know

Many terms in today's boy language come from English and, at least from the spelling, are often adopted one-to-one.
  • Translated, the term "lit" means something like "illuminated" or "lit". In English slang, however, the word is also used as an expression for "drunk" or "intoxicated".
  • In the German language for boys, however, Lit has a different meaning than its translation. Here, the expression is mainly used to describe a positive thing and replaces expressions such as "beautiful", "great", "horny", "great" or "exciting".
  • Lit can even be increased - "lit af" or even "lit as fuck" is often used when something is particularly great.
Lit and other trendy words have long been used not only in spoken youth language, but are also an integral part of writing, especially in theSocial Media areas.

Youth Word of the Year

Since 2008, the "Youth Word of the Year" is chosen annually by the Langenscheidt publishing house. Words for the election can be suggested by anyone and submitted to the publisher. After the collection phase, a public voting takes place in which the youth word is chosen from the previously collected words.
