Valheim: What is a seed and how does the system work?

When starting the game of Valheim you have several options. Seeds play a crucial role in this. Our guide explains what seeds actually are and how the system is structured.

The foundation: seeds carry the DNA of every Valheim map.

Depending on the seed, the elements of the map can be distributed quite differently. This is important for your game start and further progress.

Valheim: These are Seeds and that's why they are so handy

The game system of Valheim works as follows:
  • The seed is a code that defines the shape of a card with all its details.
  • Since the maps in Valheim are procedurally generated, there are theoretically an infinite number of possibilities and thus seeds.
  • As a result, the seeds differ from each other by the arrangement of their elements. This affects, for example, the relative position of the biomes to each other.
  • Since seeds and characters are independent of each other, you can play with your character on any number of maps. This is suitable above all for multiplayer sessions.
  • Seeds can also be copied. This means you get a new game world that corresponds exactly to the seed, however, this is not yet explored and built on, but virgin.
Thanks to this system, Valheim offers extremely flexible options, which is well received by the community. For example, it is possible to advance a map in solo play and spontaneously hop into a multiplayer session on another map with the same character. Not only the skill levels, but also the inventory is always consistent, so it always remains.
