WiFi and Cellular - what you need to know

WiFi is short for "Wireless Fidelity" and is a term of art invented for marketing purposes.
  • The abbreviation is usually used as a synonym for WLAN.
  • So if your iPad or Apple Watch is WiFi enabled, you can connect the devices to the home WLAN network, for example, to surf the Internet.
Cellular is an in-house designation of Apple, which stands for the mobile connection in the 4G or LTE network.
  • If your iPad or the Apple Watch Cellular-enabled, you can surf the net with a corresponding mobile phone contract even without WLAN.

iPad and Apple Watch with SIM card

If you have an iPad with Cellular capability, you can use either the integrated eSIM card or a nano-SIM card with current models. You insert the nano SIM card into the tablet via a special SIM card slot.Unlike the iPad, the Apple Watch does not have a SIM slot for space reasons and only has the integrated eSIM. You can have the eSIM card activated by your mobile carrier using an activation code. You can usually request the code from the provider via your user account.
