iPhone: Disable Live Photos - how to do it

If you don't use the Live Photos feature or if you want your photos to use less storage space, it is recommended to disable the Live Photos recording. The deactivation is possible both permanently and only for a single shot.

How to disable Live Photo creation on iPhone

Since the release of iPhone 6, you can take Live Photos with your iPhone's camera, not just still images. However, since these save an additional 1.5 seconds before and after the photo is taken in addition to the actual photo, Live Photos take up significantly more storage space. Since Live Photos recording is turned on by default, you need to disable the function if you want to take a still picture.

1. To permanently disable Live Photos, please open the Settings app of your iPhone, navigate to "Camera" > "Camera Settings" and move the slider next to the "Live Photo" entry to the left to disable the function.
2. If you want to disable the recording of Live Photos instead only once, this goes directly in the camera app by tapping on the yellow circle there.

How to convert Live Photos on the iPhone into still images

If you have already created a Live Photo, you can convert it into a still image after the fact. To do this, first open the Photos app and tap Live Photos in the Media Types section. Then select the images for which you want to disable the Live Photos feature, tap the "Share" icon and select "Duplicate". This will open a new window where you can convert the selected Live Photos to still images by tapping "Duplicate as Still Photo".
