Repairing faulty hard disk sectors

In HDD and in SSD hard disks it can happen that individual sectors of the hard disk are faulty. This means that no data can be retrieved or saved in these areas. You notice an error mostly by the fact that files disappear, are faulty or can no longer be opened.

How to repair your hard drive

If you identify faulty hard drive sectors on your computer, act quickly to prevent a major file loss. For this purpose, you can use system-internal tools or install special programs. If it is an extensive physical damage, you will not be able to repair it with software tools. In this case, you should immediately create a backup of all data and replace the hard drive.

Use Windows tools

  1. Open Windows Explorer and right-click on the faulty hard drive.
  2. Select "Tools" and then "Error Check".
  3. The tool will now check all sectors of the hard drive and show errors in a list.
  4. The tool will automatically try to clean up any errors found.

These programs also help

  1. TestDisk: The free software searches for bad sectors, tries to repair them and restores deleted files.
  2. EaseUS: The program repairs HDD hard drives and restores deleted and damaged files. All functions you get only if you buy the full version.
  3. CheckDrive: The program is suitable for both types of hard drives. Es soll dauerhaft installiert bleiben und überwacht die Festplatte, um vor einem eventuellen Datenverlust zu warnen.
