iPhone as a spirit level - how it works

Since the update to iOS 12, you can also use your iPhone as a spirit level. To do this, all you need is the tape measure app, which comes pre-installed on all newer iPhone models. Get an overview of how to properly proceed to align objects or surfaces.

iPhone: How to use the Apple smartphone as a spirit level

If you have an iPhone with iOS 12 as the operating system, it has the new tape measure app. This app, in turn, contains a function that makes it possible for you to use your iPhone as a spirit level and determine the alignment of certain objects.

1. To use the spirit level function, please tap the icon of the tape measure app in the app overview to open it.
2. If you are using an iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus with iOS 12, please open the camera app instead.
3. Tap then on "Spirit Level" and align your iPhone with an object.
4. If the object is level, you will be shown the value 0 degrees in the app, and the display will turn green.

In addition to the possibility of using the spirit level to check whether an object is level, you can also use it to align a surface. To do so, tap "Level" in the Tape Measure app and lay your iPhone flat on the surface. If the surface is level, the screen will glow green. To align to a specific angle, point your iPhone at an object and tap the screen to detect its tilt angle. Then, point your iPhone at another object and rotate it until the screen turns green.
