Windows 10: Block websites - how to block content
To block websites on Windows 10, you don't need a special program. This is because the existing on-board tools already allow you to reliably block some websites without any additional software.
How blocking websites works on Windows 10
By blocking websites, you can reliably prevent dangerous as well as problematic content. This is especially helpful if you share your device with multiple users.- To lock host files, you need to log in to Windows as an administrator.
- Open the editor with administrator privileges in Windows Search.
- Click "Open File" in the menu.
- In the "File Name" area, enter the path "%windir%\System32\drivers\etc" and open it.
- A new directory will now open. Search for the file type by entering the setting "All files (*.*)".
- Now your host files appear at the top of the list, which you can select and open.
- To permanently block the desired websites, you must add "127.0.0.1" and a space at the end of the IP addresses to the domain.
- To be safe, you should always enter both variants.
- For example, if you want to block Facebook, you need to enter "127.0.0.1 facebook.com" and "127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com".
