Do you need liability insurance for an e-scooter?
If you want to participate in road traffic with an e-scooter, you have to observe various regulations. These are set out in the regulation for very small electric vehicles, which was adopted in 2019. Here, for example, it is stated that an e-scooter may only drive a maximum of 20 km/h.- A motor vehicle liability insurance is mandatory, as for most vehicles. Also when driving a scooter you need this.
- Many insurance companies already offer such insurance for e-scooters. For this you will find a lot of information on the Internet or you can contact the individual insurance companies directly.
- You do not need a driver's license to drive an e-scooter, but you must have a minimum age of 14 years.
- In addition, the e-scooter model used requires a general operating permit. This is either applied for the model by the manufacturer or by you only for your vehicle.
- A helmet obligation does not exist due to the low speed allowed, but it is specified exactly where you may ride the e-scooter.
- Allowed are, among other things, bicycle paths. However, also pay attention to the signage of the routes, because not always e-scooters are allowed where you can also ride a bike.
