Connecting your Mac to a server or network drive is easy

A network drive can be quite useful for backing up or sharing data. This usually involves using a server such as a NAS on the network. A Mac can connect to one very easily by setting up the network drive.

How to connect Mac to a server or network drive?

Network drives are external hard drives that are usually located on the local network. If you want to connect your Mac to such a server, proceed as follows. If you want to connect to a server, use the same procedure.
  1. Press "Go to" at the top of the menu and then continue to "Connect to server...".
  2. Now type the network path to the network drive under "Server address". Write in front of the path "smb:", so "smb://<ipAddress>/<partition name>.
  3. Now you will be asked for your credentials. Add your username and password and finally press "Connect".
If you use a Synology NAS, you must enter its address preceded by "afp://". You will also need to enter your user data here. To create a backup of your Mac on the NAS beziheungsweise the network drive use the terminal. With a Synology NAS this is easier because you can use the Apple backup program called TimeMachine to back up your data to the NAS.
