YouTube: Creating timestamps - what is it and how to do it?

YouTube videos like to be linked. If you want to link to a specific location in the process, this is possible via timestamp. Our guide explains what it is and how to use it.

Along the timeline: use a timestamp to mark a spot in the video very precisely.

The longer the video, the more important it can be to filter out certain moments. This is possible when linking with timestamps.

How YouTube timestamps work

A timestamp marks a firmly defined moment in the video's timeline. You can note this in the link:
  1. Pause the video at the point where you want to set the timestamp.
  2. Right-click in the video.
  3. Select "Copy video URL at this point".
When you post the link now, for example in Facebook or in a WhatsApp message, you will see that there is a sequence of numbers at the end of the link - this is the timestamp. The format refers to seconds: For example, if you set the timestamp at 5 minutes, the timestamp in the link will be "t=300", since it is 300 seconds. Thanks to this principle, you can also insert a timestamp manually, as it is even necessary in the mobile view. Namely, the above method works only in the browser. Simply append the suffix "?t=number of seconds" to the YouTube address of the video, for example "?t=120", to provide the video with a timestamp of 120 seconds (= 2 minutes).
