In Minecraft there are the following pickaxes, listed in ascending order in terms of the quality of the material:

• Stone pickaxe
• Iron pickaxe
• Gold pickaxe
• Diamond pickaxe
• Netherite pickaxe

You always need the named material to make it. A better pickaxe is the prerequisite in the course of the game to be able to mine higher quality materials at all.
