Protecting YouTube for children: How it works

YouTube also offers a lot of interesting content for children. Other content, on the other hand, you probably don't want to make available to your offspring. We'll show you how to childproof YouTube.

You can childproof YouTube with a single setting.

By using YouTube in restricted mode, you automatically filter out content that has been reported as offensive or inappropriate. If your children use YouTube, this mode is recommended.

Making YouTube childproof - only a few clicks needed

Thanks to the flat structure of the site, you can find many of YouTube's settings already on the homepage. This also applies to the restricted mode:
  1. Go to youtube.com and click on your profile picture in the top right corner.
  2. A context menu will now open.
  3. At the very bottom you will find the entry "Restricted Mode: Disabled". Click on it to activate safe mode and use the parental controls.
The restricted mode is then active and increases the child safety by a good bit. Keep in mind, however, that no filter is perfect - so the possibility of seeing inappropriate content still exists, even if the risk is lower.

Restricted mode in the app

Also note: You need to set it separately on each device you use YouTube on. On mobile devices, here's how::
  • In the YouTube app for Android, tap the icon with the three dots, then go to "Settings" and find Restricted Mode under "General."
  • In the iOS app, tap the gear icon and find "SafeSearch" or "Safety Mode" under "Settings". With the "Strict" setting, you make the app as childproof as possible.
