IPhone 12 Pro will not have the 120Hz Pro Motion technology screen. It's scheduled to arrive on iPhones coming out in 2021
Apple's iPhone 12 Pro will hit the market next September, but there's already a backtrack on features. The 120Hz screen will not be available for this model. The announcement comes from Ross Young, CEO of Digital Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), who in a list of smartphones with this type of screen did not include Apple's upcoming model.
The CEO of DSCC posted on Twitter a list of smartphones already on the market or coming in 2020 that support the 120Hz screen frequency. From the rumors now circulating since April, the iPhone 12 Pro was also supposed to be equipped with this technology, but the model does not appear in the list published by Young. It is not excluded, however, that by next year, Apple could integrate the feature in the upcoming models.
iPhone 12 Pro, no 120Hz screen
To point out that Apple's iPhone 12 Pro is absent in the list was the same Young, confirming the anticipations down provided by other sources. The issue hinges on whether or not it is possible to use OLED panels with LTPO technology for the iPhone screens, which allow to vary the refresh rate from 1 to 120 Hz depending on the displayed content.
According to the sources, Apple will have access to this type of components no earlier than 2021. One of the reasons for the lack of this feature, already used by the Pro-motion technology of the iPad Pro, could depend on the impact that the frequency of this type of screen would have on battery life. Apple may therefore have found the use of the 120 Hz screen on iPhones unsatisfactory and according to rumors, smartphones in the 2020 range will continue to feature a traditional 60 Hz panel.
120 Hz screen: here are the equipped smartphones
For the moment, therefore, Apple has to give up this feature for its iPhone 12 Pro, but it is not certain that by 2021 the knot of the battery could be solved and the 120 Hz screen inserted on the next models. If in fact iPhone 12 Pro remains behind, the 120Hz screen has already been equipped for its competitors. 120Hz screen-equipped smartphones coming out in 2020 include the Asus Rog Phone 3, Samsung Galaxy Note 20, Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 and Google Pixel 5.
