The new smartphone from Motorola is a "top of the line from last year": equipped with SoC Snapdragon 870, it will have plenty of power.
Interesting news are boiling in the pot at Motorola: the new Edge S is now in the home stretch and is ready to bring with it a first-class chip. This is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 model, the first processor of the 800 series to make its debut on the market within a device made by the well-known manufacturer.
The SoC integrated on the upcoming Motorola smartphone, made through a 7nm manufacturing process, can count on a Kryo 585 octa-core 64-bit CPU and a clock speed that stands at 3.2GHz. The processor has been recognized by industry experts as the meeting point between the previous Snapdragon 865 and 865 Plus models, announced in December 2019 and July 2020 respectively and of which it is the natural evolution, and the top 2021 Snapdragon 888. The main beneficiaries are performance and speed, significantly improved compared to the past; in particular, the mobile gaming experience benefits, thanks to the introduction of Qualcomm's proprietary Snapdragon Elite Gaming solution.
Motorola Edge S, debuting with a first-class SoC
Among Qualcomm's flagship devices, the Snapdragon 870 has on its side a design that aims to deliver top-notch performance, such as the connection speed provided by 5G sub-6 GHz and mmWave networks.
Unveiled a few days ago, the Snapdragon 870 is actually a higher-frequency version of the top-of-the-line 2020 865: it's not at the levels of the new 888, but it's still very powerful. In addition to Motorola, there are many manufacturers who have recognized its validity, so much so that they use it for their key products; among these are the names of Chinese Xiaomi and OnePlus, Oppo and iQoo.
"At Motorola, we strive to deliver meaningful innovations that matter to our consumers, and we are pleased to announce that we will soon introduce the new Snapdragon 870 5G mobile platform to our portfolio, unleashing the power of our smartphones for new and unique experiences," Sergio Buniac, president, Motorola Mobility, had said about the SoC's integration into the company's devices.
Motorola Edge S, technical characteristics
In addition to the SoC, there are still a few technical features already known that concern the new model signed Motorola, which was assigned the codename "Nio" during the processing stages. They range from the GPU integrated into the processor, or Adreno 650, to the ISP Spectra 480. There is also Wi-Fi 6 connectivity and, even in terms of Bluetooth, the latest available standards have been integrated, since we are talking about version 5.2. Lastly, we add a USB-C Gen 3.1 type charging and data transfer cable port.
Motorola Edge S, design and cameras
Although we still don't know anything official about the design of the new Motorola Edge S, there is no shortage of leaks indicating the presence of a quad-cam on the rear side. The camera should be able to count on a primary 64 MP sensor, but it is not excluded that it may inherit the 108 MP present today on Edge Plus (equipped with SoC Snapdragon 865 +); on the front side, however, there would be a dual camera, embedded in the screen via punch-hole.
Motorola Edge S, presentation and launch date
Officially, Motorola Edge S will debut in China on January 26, with a live streaming event starting at 7:30 pm local time (12:30 am Italian time). Currently, however, there are still no certain information on price, launch dates and markets on which it will be available, so we will have to wait until the 26th to learn more and understand if and when this model will arrive in Italy.
