Another 6 apps were discovered hiding the Joker virus and activating unsolicited subscriptions. Here's what they are and how to defend yourself
Just over a month ago we talked about the return of one of the hardest Android viruses to fight: Joker. And now computer researchers from the Pradeo company have discovered 6 more apps on the Google Play Store that hide the dangerous malware inside. The apps have been downloaded more than 200,000 times, which means that there are many users in danger all over the world.
Joker is a sneaky virus that can adapt to any situation and change its face every time. Google has tried hard to block it, removing more than 1,700 apps from the Play Store, but the virus modifies small parts of its code every time to pass Play Protect checks. What risks do you run by installing an app with Joker on your smartphone? There are multiple actions that the virus is capable of performing. It can turn into spyware that tracks user activities and collects personal data, or it can disguise itself as adware and start displaying misleading ads on the screen.
The version of Joker found within these six apps is even more devious: it activates value-added services on users' smartphones, namely the famous monthly fee subscriptions that scam users by charging €5-6 per month. Here are the apps and how to defend yourself.

Joker is the most dangerous malware present in the Android environment. Discovered in 2017, it has always managed to adapt to different situations and after three years it still continues to be present inside apps and infecting thousands of users. I ricercatori di Pradeo hanno pubblicato sul loro blog personale anche la lista delle 6 app da dover cancellare immediatamente. Si tratta nella maggior parte dei casi di app utility e in totale hanno raccolto oltre 200.000 download. Ecco la lista completa:
- Safety AppLock – 10.000 installazioni
- Convenient Scanner 2 – 100.000 installazioni
- Push Message – Texting&SMS – 10.000 installazioni
- Emoji Wallpaper – 10.000 installazioni
- Separate Doc Scanner – 50.000 installazioni
- Fingertip GameBox – 1.000 installazioni
Come difendersi da Joker
Dopo la segnalazione dei ricercatori informatici di Pradeo, le sei applicazioni sono state prontamente eliminate dal Google Play Store, però il pericolo per gli utenti non è ancora concluso. Chi ha installato una di queste app deve immediatamente cancellarla dallo smartphone e sarebbe utile anche formattare il dispositivo in modo da eliminare per sempre il virus.
Per difendersi da Joker non esistono delle azioni sempre valide. I consigli da seguire sono sempre gli stessi:
- installare un buon antivirus Android;
- non installare applicazioni di cui non si conosce lo sviluppatore;
- non fidarsi delle recensioni troppo positive, in molti casi sono ingannevoli.
