What is an APK file

APK is short for "Android Package" and refers to an installation file needed to install Android apps. By default, APK files are installed automatically when you download an app from the Play Store to your mobile device. This is necessary if an app is not available in the Play Store or you want to download an older app version.

How to install an APK file on your Android device

Before you can install an app on your mobile device using an APK file, it is necessary to make some changes in the device's settings.
  1. To do this, navigate to "Security" > "Device Management" in the settings and enable the "Unknown Sources" entry to allow the installation of APK files.
  2. Then download the required APK file from the Internet to your mobile device and, if necessary, confirm the displayed warning.
  3. Once the download of the APK file is complete, open the notification bar of your device and tap on the displayed message.
  4. Thereupon, the installation wizard will open and the app will be installed on the Android device as usual.
