Restore WhatsApp backup: How to do it

If you have your WhatsApp messages and media files backed up, you can easily restore them. This is useful if you got a new smartphone or had to reset your device. You can load the backup in two different ways.

Restore WhatsApp data via backup

A WhatsApp backup lets you save messages, photos and other files that you send or receive. Once you load the saved backup, you will be able to find your chats and related messages. If you have saved your backup to Google Drive or iCloud and want to use WhatsApp again with the same mobile number and account, you will be automatically asked if you want to load the backup. If you have saved the backup on your device, you must first rename the backup file and possibly transfer it to the new device.

Restore backup via Google Drive or iCloud

1. Open WhatsApp.
2. Verify yourself with your mobile number.
3. You will be asked if you want to restore WhatsApp.
4. Confirm by tapping "RESTORE".

Restore local backup

1. Open the file manager on the device where the backup was created.
2. Suchen Sie einen der beiden Pfade „/sdcard/WhatsApp/Databases“ oder „/local/WhatsApp/Databases“.
3. Suchen Sie folgende Datei: msgstore-JJJJ-MM-TT.1.db.crypt12.
4. Nennen Sie die Datei um in „msgstore.db.crypt12“.
5. Verschieben Sie die Datei, falls notwendig, auf das neue Gerät.
6. Öffnen Sie WhatsApp.
7. Warten Sie auf das Dialogfeld und wählen Sie dann „WIEDERHERSTELLEN“ aus.
