Subnautica: Craft Aerogel - the porous gel explained!

In Subnautica you go on an underwater adventure. You have a large, open world at your disposal, where many different animals and crafting opportunities await you. To build your underwater station, you'll need various materials. Among them is the porous aerogel.

How to make the aerogel in Subnautica

The aerogel in Subnautica is a very heat-resistant material. You will need it to make a Neptune main engine, a Cyclops fire extinguishing system and other items. However, the most important use is for the PRAWN suit, since you'll use it to cross the sea in the game. To craft the material, you need the fabricator.
  1. For the aerogel, you need two materials. Per aerogel you need one gel bag, which you can find in various biomes underwater. Especially in the Mushroom Forest, the Jelly Schroom Caves and the Safe Shallows Caves you can find the gel sack. It can also be found in the Safe Shallows and the Lost River.
  2. Once you have collected a few gel sacs, you can obtain their spores by cutting them open. With these it is possible to plant gel sacks.
  3. The second material is a ruby. You can also find this one in different areas.
