Revoke direct debit - how to get your money back

If you have cancelled a subscription, for example, it can happen that the fee is still debited from your account. To get your money back as quickly as possible, you should revoke the direct debit.

This is how you revoke your direct debit

Not only can it be pleasant for you if you have your direct debit reversed, but also for your counterpart, as this saves them having to fill out documents.
  1. You have the right to have any direct debit reversed within 8 weeks. In doing so, the period begins from the moment the direct debit was made.
  2. It is not necessary for you to give a reason or prove to your financial institution that you are legally revoking the direct debit.
  3. If you use online banking, you can use the "Return direct debit" function to revoke the direct debit. You will find this function on the digital account statement.
  4. If you do not use online banking, then you should formulate the revocation in writing and have it demonstrably delivered. For this, you must specify the date of the debit, the amount and the submitter of the direct debit.
  5. The service that your bank thereby offers you is free of charge and may not legally be associated with any fee.

When can you dispose of your money again?

Once you have revoked the direct debit, information is sent to the submitter of the direct debit and the bank begins with the processing. Individual financial institutions make the money available to you immediately. At the latest after 14 days you must be able to dispose of the amount again.
