RFID chips: security - this risk is behind

An RFID chip is in many different items that you come into contact with every day. Have your ID cards read, you come in contact with the chips or even when it comes to clothing or food packaging. These so-called tags are mainly used in industry. But how safe are they?

This is what you need to know about RFID chip security

In order to assess the security of an RFID chip, it is important to understand what technology is behind it. Inside the RFID tag, which is found on products for example, are antennas, analog circuitry and a digital circuit to store information. The tag itself is a passive device that cannot be put into operation without the reader. The tag therefore only receives power from the radio signals that the reader emits.
  1. In order to read the data on a chip, a special reader is required. The required frequency range is thereby precisely defined by the NFC standard.
  2. Since the energy of a chip is very weak, it depends on the reader, at what distance you can still read it.
  3. The radio chips themselves can not collect data, it is only possible to read the information that has already been previously programmed on the chip.
  4. The task of an RFID chip lies only in the identification and localization of certain objects.
  5. Disadvantage of these chips, however, is that anyone with a suitable device can read, for example, NFC money cards and thus get all the important data. This is nowadays possible with any common smartphone.
  6. The chips can no longer be read until they have been destroyed.
