Creating an ISO file on the Mac - here's how to do it

ISO files are archives that can contain programs and operating systems. Mostly they are so-called disk images, i.e. images of DVDs. For example, if you want to transfer old games from CDs and DVDs to your computer to archive them, the easiest way is to use the ISO format.

How to create an ISO file on Mac?

If your Mac is old enough that it still has a DVD drive, you're in luck. Otherwise, willy-nilly, you'll have to buy an external USB device, which you then plug into your Mac via USB port.
  1. Open Disk Utility by opening Spotlight Search with Command + Spacebar and typing "Disk Utility".
  2. Click with the right mouse button or alternatively with Command + left mouse button on the left in the context menu on the CD or DVD.
  3. Select the option "Image from <Name of CD>".
  4. Now you can select a location for the image. It is best to save it in a place that you can easily find again. Choose the format "DVD/CD-Master".
  5. Click "Save" to start creating the image. Depending on the size of the DVD, this may take more or less time. Disk Utility will notify you when the image is created.
