Instagram: Enable private account - here's how

A question of privacy: on Instagram, you have the choice of whether your account should be private or publicly visible. We explain the difference and show you how to enable the private account, if desired.

Unique: Many Instagram users prefer a private account.The difference between private and public account is quickly explained:

  • With a public account, all Instagram users can see your content.
  • With a private account, only people you have confirmed can see your content.
So if you don't want to share your photos and videos with the whole world, but only with a select group of people, the private account is the right option.

Instagram: Private account activated in a few seconds

By default, your account is publicly visible. They change this with the following steps:
  1. Open your profile in the Instagram app.
  2. Open the options by tapping on the icon in the top right corner.
  3. Here tap on "Settings".
  4. Next, switch to "Privacy.
  5. In the "Connections" section, tap on "Account Privacy".
  6. Activate the slider at "Private Account".
  7. Instagram will now ask you if you really want to perform this operation and enlighten you about the changes. Tap "Ok".
Your Instagram account is then no longer visible to anyone. If you want to change this setting again one day, it is possible in the same way: simply deactivate the slider at "Private account".
