Making YouTube video private: How it works

Not every video upload is intended for the largest possible audience. For this purpose, YouTube gives you the option to post videos privately. Our guide shows how to proceed.

Almost exclusive: Private YouTube videos are reserved for only a firmly defined circle.

The private setting is suitable, for example, for videos that you want to share only with friends or family.

How to publish private videos on YouTube

Proceed as follows:
  1. Open the overview to your YouTube videos.
  2. Go to the settings for the video that you want to set to private.
  3. There you will see under the video the note "Public". By clicking on it, a checkbox appears and you can switch to "Private".
  4. The video is now no longer visible to the public, but you can allow certain people to access it. This is done in the same move, in the input field that appears when you switch.
  5. Remember to save the changes at the end.
Note that there is a difference between "Private" and "Not listed": Namely, the latter option only means that the video cannot be found easily, but only with the right link. However, it is not limited to specific viewers - you can only achieve this with the private setting. Of course, you can undo this at any time.
