What is a TED Talk? We explain the format

The Internet has long been the world's leading entertainment medium. Among its many divisions and categories are videos that are both entertaining and educational. In the first place, this applies to TED Talks, which are very popular around the globe.

Education meets entertainment: TED Talks exist on a wide variety of topics.

Originally, TED was an innovation conference that focused on topics related to technology, entertainment and design. Through the Internet, the format grew rapidly and is now known to millions.

What is a TED Talk - and who performs there?

TED Talks can be explained as follows:
  • TED Talks are presentations by individuals on a specific topic. The events take place live with an audience at very different locations and are made available online, for example on the official homepage.
  • There are hardly any restrictions on the topics. Technology, medicine, extreme sports, philosophy, economics, art and culture - the only important thing is that the topic offers a special added value and the person has appropriate expertise.
  • To keep it entertaining, there is officially a time limit of maximum 18 minutes. In this way, even complex issues should be conveyed flush and understandable.
  • Because of the great success of the format exists an offshoot called TEDx: These are organized independently and can therefore be found all over the world. However, the basic idea and implementation are unchanged.
The main channel on YouTube can be found at this address. With well over 10 million subscribers and several billion views, TED is one of the leading YouTube addresses. Together with TEDx and additional variations such as TEDGlobal and TEDMED, the reach of the concept is enormous and contributes to the spread of meaningful knowledge.
