From Windows 8.1 to Windows 10: How the update works

Windows 8.1 is the direct predecessor of Windows 10. Accordingly, it is of course possible to upgrade a PC running Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. This still succeeds with the update wizard.

In the first period after the release of Windows 10, Microsoft had made the new operating system available as a free upgrade. But in the meantime, the upgrade is no longer suggested if you want to update from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10.

Update from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10

If you have an activated and licensed version of Windows installed, however, the update is still possible for free.

1. First download the Windows 10 Update Wizard from Microsoft.
2. Double-click the file and accept the license terms.
3. The update from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 is now checked and prepared. In addition, the storage space is saved.
4. Followed by the installation takes place, Do not turn off your PC during the entire process under any circumstances.
5. Finally, you will be prompted to restart the PC.

If you get the message that Windows is not activated, find out your product key for Windows 8.1. If you upgraded to Windows 10 from an unlicensed version, you will need to purchase a license and enter the product key.
