Windows 10: Change computer name - how to do it

The computer name appears in networks and other places in Windows 10, for example in the detail info of created files. Most users do not pay attention to the computer name. Nevertheless, it can be handy to know how to change the name.

Windows 10: Change computer name made easy

To change the computer name in Windows 10 you have different options to choose from.
  1. Click with the right mouse button on the bottom left of the Windows icon.
  2. Open the entry "System".
  3. You will now see all the info about your system. Scroll down a bit on the right side and click on the gray field "Rename this PC".
  4. Enter a new name. Allowed characters are letters, numbers and hyphens.
  5. Click "Next".
You will now get a message that the new name will be applied after a reboot. You can perform the restart directly by clicking "Restart now".

Change computer name via the File Explorer!

Alternatively, you can customize the name of your PC via the the File Explorer.
  1. Open the File Explorer and right-click on "This PC".
  2. Select the "Properties" entry in the drop-down menu.
  3. In the "Computer Name, Domain and Workgroup Settings" section, click "Change Settings" on the right side.
  4. Click "Change" in the "Computer Name" tab in the new window.
  5. Write the new name in the corresponding text field and confirm it via "Ok".
