Computer: change name in Windows

Changing the name of your computer in Windows is quite easy - at least if you know where to do it. Once you find the right menu, you'll customize the computer name, making it easy to identify your PC wherever you go.

How to change the name of your computer in Windows

The name of the computer hardly matters for the PC itself. However, the computer name is more important if, for example, you have different computers, smartphones, printers and more on your network and want to easily tell these devices apart. Although this can also be done using other data such as the MAC address, a name is quicker to see and much easier to remember. You change the name of your computer in Windows with just a few clicks:
  1. First, call up the Control Panel. The best way to do this with Windows 10 is to type "Control Panel" in the search bar at the bottom. Have you hidden the search bar, use the search by pressing the Windows key and then just start typing.
  2. Click the search result and switch to the "System" menu.
  3. Here you will now see various information about your computer. In the middle area you also have the field "Computer name". Click on the right side of the area on "Change Settings".
  4. In the new window, stay in the "Computer Name" tab. Click the "Change" button.
  5. In "Computer Name" you can now remove the current name and assign one yourself. Finally, click "OK".
You will be notified that the change will take effect only after a restart. You can perform this immediately or later. Do not forget to save progress in documents.
