Avira: Update not possible - this is the cause

If you use Avira as an antivirus program on your PC or laptop, available updates are usually performed automatically. If this is not possible, the cause is usually a faulty file. We explain here how to fix the problem so that updates are possible again.

This helps if updates are no longer possible with Avira

If Avira suddenly no longer performs automatic updates, this may be due to a single file. If the file "RebootPending.txt" remains in the installation directory after the last Avira update, it blocks all future updates. To solve the problem, it is necessary to delete the RebootPending file.
  1. For this, first open Avira and navigate in the menu of the program to "Tools" > "Configuration".
  2. Click there under "General" on the entry "Security" and uncheck the box next to "Protect files and registry entries from manipulation".
  3. Then confirm the changes with "Apply" and click "OK".
  4. Now call up the path "C:\ProgramData\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\CONFIG\" on your PC and delete the file "RebootPending.txt".
  5. Finally repeat steps 1 to 3 and activate the tamper protection again.

How to perform an Avira update manually

If no updates are performed even after deleting the RebootPending.txt file, you have the option to perform them manually. To do this, go to the Avira website "avira.com/en/support-vdf-update-info" and download the update tool. This will then create an archive with the required update files on your PC and guide you through the necessary steps to perform the update.
