Enable AHCI mode later - here's how

The Advanced Controller Interface, or AHCI for short, is a special protocol that ensures that Serial ATA devices installed in your computer, such as HDDs and SSDs, work more efficiently. Learn here how to find out if AHCI mode is active.

How to enable AHCI mode on your system

First, check if AHCI mode is already enabled. In Windows 10, this works via the Device Manager. Look for the category "IDE ATA/ATAPI controller" and see if the entry "Default SATA AHCI controller" is present there. If this is the case, AHCI is enabled. If the mode is not active, follow these steps:
  1. Open the Run dialog with the key combination [Windows] and [R].
  2. Enter "regedit" and click "Ok". The Windows Registry Editor will then open.
  3. Navigate to the registry key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Service/iaStorV"
  4. Double-click the "Start" entry on the right and enter "0" as the value. Click "OK" to confirm.
  5. Open the key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Service/iaStorV/StartOverride", call the entry "0" and enter the value "0".
  6. Then call the key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Service/storahci", open the entry "Start" and enter the value "0".
  7. Last, open the key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/storahci/StartOverride", call the entry "0" and enter a "0" as value.
  8. Restart the computer and call the Bios. There you will find in the storage settings or the SATA configuration the entry AHCI, which you can activate.
