How can I allow a program in Windows Firewall?

Windows 10 comes with a built-in firewall that, among other things, controls programs' Internet access. Depending on how the firewall is configured, some programs may not be able to access the network. Learn how to still allow programs via an exception.

How to add an exception in Windows Firewall

If a program is blocked by Windows Firewall, you can set an exception via the Control Panel.
  1. Open the Windows Start menu and click the gear icon to access the Settings.
  2. Select the "Update and Security" category in the overview.
  3. Click "Windows Security" in the navigation on the left and then select "Firewall & Network Protection".
  4. First click "Allow app access through firewall" and then click "Change settings".
  5. Click "Allow other app..." and specify the path for the program for which you want to set an exception.
  6. Click "Add" and finally "OK" so that the settings are saved.
Note that you need appropriate permission to change settings on the firewall.

Add exceptions - so it works with other firewalls

Many of the current antivirus programs are also equipped with a firewall function. For example, if you use Bitdefender or Kaspersky as protection software and want to add an exception for a program, this works via the settings of Bitdefender and not via the system settings.
