What is the function of a repeater? Find out here

A repeater is also called a range extender or WLAN amplifier. Such a repeater is mainly used in buildings with a low WLAN range. Which function has a Repeater exactly and how you use it correctly, read with us.

How a WLAN repeater works

On the outside, a repeater strongly resembles a classic router. However, a repeater, which is also called an amplifier, has significantly fewer functions than a router and is mainly used to improve WLAN reception in your house or apartment.
  1. A repeater is connected to a router for this purpose to receive its WLAN signal and then output amplified again.
  2. The connection between router and repeater can be either wireless via WLAN or wired with the help of a LAN cable.
  3. By using a repeater, the range of the WLAN signal emitted by the router is significantly increased. Depending on the selected repeater model, the range of the WLAN increases by up to 100 meters.
  4. Although normally the use of a repeater is sufficient, you can theoretically connect up to 254 WLAN amplifiers to a router at the same time.

Functionality: How to connect a repeater

If you want to use a repeater to improve the WLAN range in your home, the first thing you need to do is connect and set up the repeater. The easiest way to do this is to connect the repeater to the router via WPS after connecting it to the power supply. To do this, first press the WPS button on your repeater until its WLAN LED starts to flash. After that, also press the WPS button of the router and wait until the devices have connected with each other.
