Recalibrate Google Maps: How it works

Sometimes it happens that the orientation is no longer correct when navigating with Google Maps. In this case, you should recalibrate the compass. Our guide shows how to do it.

You can recalibrate the compass in Google Maps with a wave of your hand.

A misaligned compass is confusing and makes navigation difficult. Fortunately, it's not complicated to recalibrate the service.

Recalibrate Google Maps: So it works

Proceed as follows:
  1. Open Maps and press on your location, which is displayed as a blue dot.
  2. In the blue window that now opens, tap on "Calibrate compass" at the bottom.
  3. With the smartphone in hand, follow the animated movement, which consists of an elongated loop. In the process, you can also see the compass accuracy so far.
  4. Run the movement a few times and finish with "Done".
You can then directly check whether the compass is now correctly aligned. If not, repeat the process until the calibration is successful.
