Google Maps: Enable timeline - how it works

Google Maps' timeline allows you to save all your paths. This feature polarizes users and is usually not enabled by default. If you want to use it, we'll show you how.

Only if you want to: the timeline captures all your movements and locations.

Google Maps is the most popular map service in the world and features like the timeline have contributed to this.

Maps: Enable Timeline - here's how

Proceed as follows:
  1. Open the menu in the Maps app.
  2. Select "Timeline".
  3. Tap the three dots in the top right corner and select "Settings and Privacy."
  4. Scroll down to "Location Settings." There, the two options "Location recording is enabled" and "Location history is enabled" must be active.
Of course, you can turn off the timeline at any time in the same way. Your paths will then no longer be recorded and Google will receive less usable data from you. You can also learn how to delete the timeline in this guide.
