Windows 10: Use old photo viewer

With Windows 10 came some innovations. Among other things, the photo display has also changed and looks different by default. However, if you are not satisfied with the new design and navigation, you can also use the old photo viewer. However, some steps are necessary to activate it.

Windows 10: How to activate the old photo display

Under Windows 10, the old photo display from previous versions has not disappeared. The newer version is merely set as the default and must be replaced.
  1. Use the key combination [Windows] + [R] to open "Run".
  2. In the new text box, enter "regedit" and confirm with [Enter].
  3. Using the overview on the left side, now navigate to the path [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Photo Viewer\Capabilities\FileAssociations] and click there with the right mouse button on a free area.
  4. From the new menu, select "New" and "String".
  5. Name the string [.jpg] and open it by double-clicking.
  6. Assign [PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Tiff] as value and then repeat the process for all desired image formats.

Windows 10: Set old photo viewer as default

  1. When you now select an image file and want to open it, several options are available.
