Photoshop: Create ICO file - how it works

ICO files are files that store icons for your operating system. You can easily make such file in Photoshop. However, to create them you need a plug-in, which enables the program to export in this file format.

Install plug-ins for Photoshop

To enable Photoshop to manage, create and export ICO file as well, a plug-in is needed. You can download the extension from this link.

1. To install the plug-in for Photoshop, you need to move the downloaded file "ICOFormat.8bi" to the path [C:Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS6/Plug-Ins\FileFormats]. Depending on where you have Photoshop installed, this path may of course vary.
2. For the Mac, you will need the "ICOFormat.plugin" file, which you move to the path [Macintosh HD/Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS6/Adobe Photoshop CS6.app/Contents/Required/Plug-Ins].
3. Afterwards you have to restart Photoshop if the program was open at the time of the file move.

This is how icons are created

1. Basically only the file format for Windows plays a crucial role when creating icons.
2. Zudem müssen Sie darauf achten, dass die Datei nicht größer als 128x128 Pixel ist und mindestens eine Größe von 16x16 Pixeln besitzt.
3. Wenn Sie mit Ihrer erstellten Grafik zufrieden sind, können Sie wie gewohnt bei Photoshop zu „Datei“ wechseln und dort auf „Speichern unter“ klicken.
4. Nun geben Sie einen Speicherort für die Datei sowie einen Namen an.
5. Der wichtigste Schritt jedoch ist, dass Sie als Dateiformat „ICO“ zum Speichern auswählen.
