Digital Nomad: Definition and explanation of the term

The Internet has changed the very foundations of the global economy. An ever-increasing share of the working population is benefiting from this, as digital nomads literally have the world at their fingertips.

Digital nomads travel the world and just keep working while they do so.

In this guide, we discussed digital natives. Digital Nomads are another result of the digitized world.

Digital Nomads: Working around the world, on a whim

Literally translated Digital Nomad means "digital nomad" or "digital nomad." This refers to a very specific lifestyle that was not possible before:
  • Digital nomads are people who work purely digitally and are therefore not tied to a specific location. They only need an Internet connection to work.
  • Most of them are self-employed or freelancers. They use the geographical freedom to travel the world without having to take vacation, because they can continue to earn money in any place.
  • This has created a global trend with its own industry: Thus, in more and more places there are accommodations combined with shared offices, whose concept is fully tailored to digital nomads. Sunny locations by the sea are particularly popular, often even with access to surfing courses.
Examples can be found in many places, such as Lisbon, Gran Canaria or Santa Cruz in California. Because of the low cost of living, Asian destinations are also popular in the scene, especially the surf mecca Bali. Digital nomads live out complete flexibility, the risk is quite low, because whoever doesn't like this lifestyle in the long run can simply pack their bags and head home.
