Bluetooth speakers: what is the maximum range?

Bluetooth speakers allow you to bypass cumbersome cabling and conveniently listen to your favorite music wherever you want. What kind of transmission range the speakers have depends on various factors. Get an overview of the Bluetooth classes and the interference factors that affect the transmission range.

All important info on speed and range

Unlike WLAN networks, for example, Bluetooth connections only achieve a low speed, which is nevertheless sufficient for playing music or transferring photos. How high the transmission speed ultimately is depends on the Bluetooth version. The current Bluetooth 5, for example, offers the highest transmission speed to date with 2 Mbit/s.What maximum range Bluetooth speakers have depends on the Bluetooth class. You can find out which class your speakers have via the technical data of the device.
  • Class 1 is the strongest of the three classes. It transmits with 100 milliwatts up to 100 meters.
  • Class 2 transmits with 10 milliwatts and can reach a maximum range of up to 50 meters.
  • Class 3 is the class with the smallest range, it only radios with one milliwatt up to a maximum of 10 meters. The big advantage over the other classes is the minimal power consumption.

Can the Bluetooth connection be disturbed?

Like any other radio connection, Bluetooth connections can also be disturbed. Especially obstacles like walls, reinforced concrete or larger metal objects can interfere with the connection and drastically reduce the range. Therefore, try to place the speakers as centrally as possible and in such a way that they are not covered.
