GPT or MBR? How to partition your hard disk

Whenever you initialize a new hard disk in Windows using Disk Management, you will be asked whether you want to use Master Boot Record (MBR) or GUID Partition Table (GPT). Since GPT is a new standard that is part of the UEFI standards, you should choose GPT.

What is the difference between GPT and MBR?

MBR and GPT are both hard drive layouts that specify how data is stored on your hard drive. The main difference here is the amount of data that can be stored.
  • With MBR, the old system, only a maximum of 2 terabytes can be stored. Furthermore, only a maximum of four primary partitions or three primary partitions and one extended partition are allowed.
  • GPT, on the other hand, supports a volume of 1 billion terabytes. GPT can coexist with MBR in this regard to be able to communicate with older systems
during the changeover period.
  • If you want to know whether your hard disk uses MBR or GPT, you can easily find out via Disk Management. Press the Windows + R key combination and type "diskmgmt.msc". Press Enter and the Disk Management opens. Now make a right click on the disk and press further on "Properties". Press the "Volumes" tab at the top. Hier sehen Sie unter „Partitionsstil“, welches Layout Ihre Festplatte benutzt.
Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass GPT die Zukunft ist und deshalb auf jeden Fall verwendet werden sollte.
