There are a total of 46 iconic weapons in Cyberpunk 2077, the first of which you can get pretty early on.

Cyberpunk 2077: Iconic weapons as faithful companions through the game

Iconic weapons are unique - and not just in one respect:

• This already starts with the naming. Instead of a sober model name, each iconic weapon has an individual proper name. Whether Chaos, Doom Doom, Kongou, Widow Maker or Cottonmouth, there is no danger of confusion.
• Even more important, however, are the properties. These are namely also quite individual. For this reason, iconic weapons are often particularly powerful. For example, the Widowmaker sniper rifle has an integrated silencer.
• Thanks to the upgrade system, you can always keep iconic weapons during your progress and improve them further.

It is thus advisable to reserve the upgrade materials primarily for iconic weapons, since normal weapons are much more interchangeable and the upgrade there is usually hardly worth it.
