What is the first Pokémon game? An overview

When asked what the first Pokémon game is, many users fall into a trap. Namely, the first titles released in Europe are not the original developed games. Also, hidden in the chronology of the games is a small hook, of which many users know nothing at all.

What was the first Pokémon game?

Many users believe that the yellow edition is the first Pokémon game, as the cover features the iconic Pokémon Pikachu and the game's content ties in with the first episode of the anime.
  1. However, the yellow edition is only one special edition, which is even only the third game developed by Game Freak and distributed by Nintendo.
  2. The first two Pokémon editions are Pokémon Red and Green from 1996.
  3. However, these never made it to the European market, because of the poor and bad code base, the games could not be translated.
  4. Only the development of Pokémon Blue made a translation possible, so Pokémon Red was redeveloped and, together with the blue edition in 1999, became the first Pokémon games to hit the European market.
  5. Almost a year later, only the yellow edition appeared.
  6. The second official generation of Pokémon games then appeared in 2001, after Nintendo developed some deviant Pokémon games.
