Excel: Automatic numbering

Unlike Microsoft Word, there is no obvious option in Excel at first glance that allows you to automatically number your data. Learn from us what options you have if you want to automatically number rows and columns in Excel.

Number rows automatically: How to proceed

If you want to number a column or row in Excel, it works with the help of the fill-in box.
  1. Select the first cell of the row or column you want to number.
  2. Then enter the desired value with which the numbering should begin.
  3. Now select the second cell and enter another value to set a pattern. For example, for consecutive numbering, enter 1 and 2 in the first cells. Alternatively, you can also use a number series as numbering. For example, enter 3 and 6 in the first cells.
  4. Mark the two cells with the initial values and drag the fill box over the range that should be numbered.

Numbering using functions

In Excel, many tasks can be done using formulas and functions, so the numbering of rows and columns can also be automated with a corresponding function.
  1. Mark the first cell from which the numbering should start.
  2. Enter the function =Row(A1) or if you want to number a column instead of a row, it works with the function: =Column(A1).
  3. Then drag the fill box over the area that should be filled.
