HDMI: What is CEC? We explain the handy feature

HDMI has already been one of the most important connection standards in the world for years. Thanks to CEC, you can operate HDMI even more conveniently. Our guide explains what the term means and what it's all about.

Everything in one hand: HDMI allows you to control multiple devices with one remote control.

Anyone zapping through programs wants to do so with as little effort as possible. HDMI CEC is helpful here.

HDMI CEC: One remote control for multiple devices

CEC stands for "Customer Electronics Control": namely, with CEC you can centrally control multiple devices connected via HDMI.
  • Perhaps the best-known use case relates to the Fire TV Stick. Via HDMI CEC, you can operate not only the stick, but also the TV with the remote control of the stick. This means you no longer need the TV remote control and that is convenient.
  • The prerequisite for this is that the TV supports CEC. However, the feature has its own names depending on the manufacturer; for example, on LG TVs you have to look for SimpLink, on Sharp for Aquos Link and on Samsung for Anynet+.
  • Often the feature is not enabled by default.
