Boot.ini: What's behind the file

When using Windows or a multiboot configuration you will encounter the system file Boot.ini. This gives you information about your operating system. If you want to customize the startup of your Windows operating system, you can also do this by making changes within Boot.ini.

How to change Boot.ini

The Boot.ini is a system file under Windows. If you want to set up a multi-boot system or specify changes for the startup of the operating system, then you need to edit this file. Before you tackle this, you should first make a backup copy of the file.
  1. Enter "Run" in the search box at the bottom left to start the corresponding dialog.
  2. Then write "sysdm.cpl" in the text box and confirm the entry via the Enter key.
  3. Now switch to the "Advanced" tab and look for the "Boot and Restore" section. Click here on the button "Settings".
  4. Now select the item "Edit" under "System Startup". Here you will then see the Boot.ini file.
  5. In the editor, under "File" now click on "Save as".
  6. With the right mouse button, then click on a free area in the box "Save as".
  7. Then click on "New" and then on "Folder". Enter a desired name and then press the Enter key.
