Excel: arrow keys scrolling suddenly? How to solve the problem

Sometimes an accidental keystroke is enough to change the way Excel works. Scrolling via arrow keys is a well-known example of this. Our guide shows how you can fix it.

Scrolling with the arrow keys is one of the most often unwanted functions of Excel.

Behind the surface of Excel, numerous functions are waiting to be discovered - even if sometimes not intentionally.

Excel arrow keys: Simply disable scrolling again

By default, you use the arrow keys on the keyboard in Excel to jump from one cell to the next or to select certain areas. If this suddenly no longer works, because Excel only scrolls when you press the arrow key, this is most likely due to an unconscious activation:
  • Scrolling with arrow keys is activated by the "Scroll" key.
  • This is usually found far to the right in the top row of the keyboard, i.e. to the right of the F keys.
  • Pressing "Scroll" again consequently deactivates scrolling.
Afterwards, you should be able to move through the document with the arrow keys again.
