Drone Regulation - these new rules apply

The Drone Regulation, introduced in 2017, contains various rules that govern the use of drones. We provide an overview of what requirements must be met before flying a drone and whether you need insurance as a private user in this article.

These are the most important rules of the new drone regulation

Flying remote-controlled drones has become increasingly popular in Germany in recent years. However, since 2017 there is a new regulation that regulates exactly what is allowed and what is not allowed when using drones.
  1. This regulation states that the use of drones for recreational use is allowed, but for commercial use a permit must be obtained beforehand.
  2. In addition, you are allowed to fly in uncontrolled airspace with your drone at a maximum height of 100 meters.
  3. Also, a distance to sensitive areas such as police stations, consulates and airports must be maintained.
  4. If your drone weighs more than 250 grams, you also need a fireproof badge, which contains information on the manufacturer and model of the drone.
  5. From a weight of 2 kilograms, a drone driver's license is also required and from 5 kilgoramm a launch is only possible with individual permission.

Drone Regulation: How to properly insure your drone

Another important point regulated by the Drone Regulation is the insurance coverage. Regardless of whether you use your drone commercially or just for personal use, you will need insurance for its use in case any damage occurs. If your private liability insurance does not cover the flying of drones, you must therefore additionally take out drone insurance.
