Sort PivotTable - how to order the table

For a better overview, you can sort the data in a PivotTable based on various criteria - such as from the smallest to the largest result or vice versa. Learn what options you have for ordering the data set in your PivotTable and how to go about it.

Ordering PivotTable using the Sort function

To order the data in your PivotTable, you can use Excel's Sort function. There you can also specify the criteria by which the table should be sorted.
  1. Click in a cell in the column of the PivotTable that you want to sort.
  2. Switch to the "Data" tab and click on the "Sort" option in the "Sort and Filter" category.
  3. Click on the "Options..." button and activate the checkbox at "Sort columns". If necessary, also activate the option after "Case sensitive" and click on "OK".
  4. Using the "Order" field, you can now specify whether, for example, sorting should be in ascending or descending order. If you select the option "Custom list...", you can set your own criteria.

What you need to pay attention to when sorting

There are a few little things that you need to pay attention to so that Excel can sort the data properly. For example, avoid having a space before entries in the table. For an optimal sorting result, you should remove all spaces beforehand. Achten Sie außerdem darauf, dass die Gebietsschemaeinstellung ebenfalls Auswirkungen auf die Sortierung haben können.
