Testing network speed: The 3 best tools

If you want to test the speed within your home network, you need the right tool for it. Three different tools on the market are particularly well suited for a very detailed analysis of your network via LAN and WLAN.

The most reliable tools for testing network speed

The three best tools for testing network speed are currently Jperf, LanBench and Lan Speed Test. The applications offer the following advantages in detail:
  • A speed test with Jperf requires two computers in a network. It is irrelevant whether the computers are connected to the router or to each other via LAN or WLAN. You can specify how long the test should run and in what form you want to receive the result.
  • Should Jperf be too complex for you and you would rather use a leaner tool, LANBench is right for you. You also need to run this tool on two computers in your network to test the network speed.
  • With LAN Speed Test, you can also measure the speed with only one PC. However, you need at least one shared folder on another device in the network. The tool then writes a file to this folder and then reads it again. It measures the speed of this process. Hierbei kann allerdings das Messergebnis von der Rechenleistung des Geräts und der Schreibleistung der Festplatte beeinflusst sein. Das Tool kostet 6 Dollar, also umgerechnet ungefähr 4 Euro.
