Steam: connection error - this may be the reason

If a connection error occurs in the Steam client, playing online games or shopping in the Steam store is not possible. To fix the problem, it is necessary to find the cause. This may lie both with you and with Steam itself.

Steam: These tips help with a connection error

If you use the Steam client on your PC to play video games, this is only possible if there is a connection to the Steam server. If this is not the case and you get the message that there is a connection error, this can have different causes.
  1. Since an Internet connection is required for a connection between Steam client and Steam server, it is recommended to first check whether you are connected to the Internet.
  2. If there is no problem with the Internet connection, open the Steam main directory, delete the folder "config" there and then please restart the program.
  3. The firewall can also prevent a connection to the Steam server. Disable the firewall therefore test and try whether a connection is now possible.
  4. If this also does not solve the problem, you still have the option to remove Steam in the control panel under "Programs and Features" > "Uninstall programs" from your Windows computer and perform a reinstallation.

Connection error: How to check if the Steam server is down

Naturally, it is also possible that the cause of the connection problem is not with you, but with Steam itself. To check whether there is currently a malfunction at Steam or maintenance work is being performed on the server, a look at the official Steam forum will help. Here you will find not only the announcement that there is a problem, but also information about how long they are expected to last.
